Statement about Jacob Johns and Racist Acts of Aggression

This is personal. We at PJC, including Executive Director Rev. Michael Malcom and Program and Policy Director Kyle Crider, have known, loved, and worked with Jacob Johns for years. Our hearts and prayers go out to Jacob, his family, and all who are persevering and even putting their lives on the line to overcome not just injustice, but actual, tangible, evil.

Please Share – Racist Attack on Climate Warrior Jacob Johns

Indigenous climate warrior, father, and friend to all Jacob Johns was shot at a peaceful prayer ceremony in New Mexico on Thursday, Sept. 28, by a violent racist seen wearing a Make America Great Again hat. Jacob is currently in stable condition in the hospital.

Message from the U.S. Climate Action Network, of which Jacob is a core member:

We are heartbroken to learn one of our beloved members and climate warrior, Jacob Johns, was the victim of a violent, racist shooting during a peaceful prayer ceremony to oppose the resurrection of a statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate on Tewa Territory, Española, New Mexico. Jacob was flown to Albuquerque, where he is in stable condition. Our hearts are with Jacob, his family, and the Indigenous Peoples of New Mexico who endure ongoing assaults on their bodies and lands. USCAN is staying close to the situation and will share ways to support when we have more information. Please reach out to ikilimanjaro@usclimatenetwork.org with any questions.

Hate crimes like the racist shooting of Jacob Johns have no place in our society. Jacob was shot during a peaceful prayer ceremony opposing the resurrection of a statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate. #SolidarityWithJacob Donate: https://gofundme.com/f/help-jacob-johns-recover-from-terrorist-shooting

We call on @GovMLG to make a statement condemning this hate crime that occurred yesterday in Española NM, investigate the racist violence, + publicly oppose the resurrection of the statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate. #SolidarityWithJacob

The United States government @POTUS should treat the racist shooting of Jacob Johns as a hate crime + act to protect peaceful protest. We stand in #SolidarityWithJacob + his demand to never resurrect the statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate.
