Celebrating 2024: A Year of Progress and Justice with The People’s Justice Council™

As 2024 comes to a close, The People’s Justice Council™ reflects on a year of growth, impactful partnerships, and power-building for justice and equity. With your unwavering support, we have made significant progress in advancing our mission of engaging and equipping communities with tools and access to fight for change at the policy level. From grassroots initiatives and national advocacy to international missions, our collective work has left a lasting mark in 2024.

Our Impact Together in 2024

This year, we continued to be a strong voice for environmental justice, ensuring that marginalized and frontline communities' voices and plight are at the forefront of our collective conscience and this movement. Here are some of our highlights.

  1. Policy and Coalition Building: PJC deepened our partnerships with communities and expanded with the addition of ShiftUS and ArminArm which are now programs of PJC. Together, we are pushing for change through key policy discussions at both local and federal levels. Fairshare’s focus is creating transformational change that recognizes the issues our communities are facing, actualizes intersectional solutions, and supports and advocates for those most affected by environmental injustice. Fair Shares has introduced the ShiftUS Campaign. This offers our communities a platform to advocate for global justice and the world we want. Arm in Arm is our national advocacy platform that holds polluters accountable through direct humanitarian nonviolent action. Our pilot Power for Southern People, not Southern Company campaign holds Southern Company responsible for protecting the values of shareholders and company CEOs' instead of the communities they serve in the Southeast. Arm in Arm does not stop Southern Company, we are holding our Public Service Commissioners accountable also. Arm in Arm offers a platform for you to get involved with national partners who are fighting for justice at a local level. These partnerships amplify our reach and influence legislative change that uplifts underserved communities while addressing systemic inequities.

  2. Media and Awareness Building: Through webinars such as our Creation Justice Webinar, Climate Justice Y’all Podcast, and community-based storytelling, we shine a light on environmental injustices and provide platforms for communities to share their stories and solutions. Congratulations to our 7-year Creation Justice Webinar and 5-year podcast. Our Creation Justice Webinar is co-produced and co-hosted with the United Church of Christ. The Climate Justice Y’all Podcast received over 10,000 downloads, co-sponsored with Greater-Birmingham Alliance to Stop Pollution and Southeast Climate and EnergyNetwork. We are leading the Gulf South out of its long history of environmental and social injustice to a brighter, cleaner future through initiatives such as the No Dirty Deals campaign (NDDC), speaking truth in power and unveiling the lies of biomass (woodchip plants), carbon capture & storage (CCS), and liquid natural gas (LNG). Through From Resilience to Restoration (FRtR) we are providing solutions and support to communities throughout the Gulf South in practical ways. We have provided over $10k in direct community support for disaster recovery. In 2024 Rev Malcom traveled to Dakar, Senegal as a part of the Harambee House and HBCU Greenfund delegation. They have been on a mission with the Senegalese government to develop public education for environmental justice and conservation practices. The People’s Justice Council has contributed through photography and video documentaries. The PJC received an Earthseed grant through The Black Hive of Movement for Black Lives. In August, PJC in partnership with HOMEF and The Black Hive of Movement for Black Lives held our inaugural CCC for Peace workshop in Benin, Nigeria for students. We were able to seed over 1 million Naira in direct support and mutual aid for community members in Benin and Lagos, Nigeria.  We taught how to use the arts (film, painting, and poetry) to advocate for environmental justice. PJC provided documentary and facilitation services.

  3. Action and Advocacy: Through workshops, education sessions, and organized events, we empowered community members with tools to advocate for clean energy solutions and sustainable living practices. Weatherize Every Residence in the Southeast (WERiSE) will continue expanding in 2025, we received our first federal grant to host hands-on learning workshops in the Gulf South. Did you know the average American home can save 10 to 20% on energy bills with relatively simple home energy renovations? Older or poorly constructed homes can save even more. And an energy-efficient home is a healthy home for its occupants! Learn more by signing on to join PJC’s Newsletter

Looking Forward to 2025

While we celebrate our accomplishments, our work is far from over. This movement demands intentional ongoing pursuit and collective action. We believe and operate with the realization that if you help the people, you will heal the planet. Your support ensures we can continue to fight into 2025 and beyond. We will continue to:

  • Engage and equip frontline communities with tools and access to build power from the grassroots up and fight for policy change.

  • Advocate for systemic change that addresses the root causes of environmental injustice; placing people and the planet over profit.

  • Fight for a just world that is equitable, sustainable, and connects people with justice.
